The Ragdoll is a relatively large and very attractive and
docile pointed cat with a semi-long coat.
The body is long and substantial, with a broad chest and heavy in the
hindquarters. The legs are not too high and medium strong, with large round
paws. The boning is solid.
The head forms a broad wedge, the skull is rather flat, the cheeks are full
and rounded, the muzzle is rounded. The neck is short and strong.
The ears are medium sized, wide at the base, and set wide apart on the
skull, when viewed in profile the ears show a slight forward tilt.
The nose is medium long and shows a gentle curve in its upper third.
The eyes are large and oval, and have an intensive deep blue colour.
The coat is dense, soft, silky and semi-long, a characteric bib can be seen
on the chest. Around the shoulders the coat is quite short and becomes
gradually longer at the flancs down to the rump. The Ragdoll is a pointed
cat. It exists in three patterns: bicolour, mitted and colourpoint.
The tail is long and bushy. |

Three patterns
Bicolour The Ragdoll, which is a pointed cat,
has also white. In the face there is a white blaze (in the shape of an
inverted "V"), which extends down to the chin, i.e. the chin is also
white. Chest and stomach are white as well as the legs and paws. The
back and the flancs are coloured, but the colour tone is paler than that
in the face and on the ears, where the mask of the points is clearly
visible. Sometimes white patches may appear on the back. The tail is
coloured.
|
Mitted This is a very special pattern in the
Ragdolls. The cat shows the typical points of pointed cats - a mask in
the face, coloured ears, legs and tail. On the nose bridge a white
stripe can be seen, and the chin is white. The back and the flancs are
coloured, the colour tone is paler than that of the points, but the paws
are white. If one inspects the underside of the cat, a broad white
stripe, running over from the chest down to the stomach, should be seen.
Unfortunately the white stripe on the nose bridge is not always present,
thus this pattern can only be recognized through the white chin and the
white paws.
|
Colourpoint The cat shows the typical Siamese
points, mostly quite dark in colour, legs and paws are also coloured.
The body is shaded in the same colour tone, but paler than that of the
points. Chest and stomach are also shaded with colour. |

stripes.

History
The Ragdoll is a very young cat breed. Around its origin several fairy
tales are passed on. It is said the the first Ragdolls had been bred by Mrs.
Ann Baker in the 1960s, a woman living in Riverside, California. She crossed
a white longhaired domestic cat, named Josephine living in her
neighbourhood, with a male similar to a Birman, out of this mating the first
seal mitted Ragdoll male originated, which was called Raggedy Ann Daddy
Warbucks. This male was crossed back to his mother Josephine by Mrs. Baker,
from where the first bicolour Ragdoll female originated, which was called
Raggedy Ann Fugianna. The male Daddy Warbucks was corssed with a cat named
Burmes, from where the first seal colourpoint Ragdoll female originated,
which was called Taggedy Ann Buckwheat. Thus today's Ragdolls can trace back
their pedigrees to the first foundation Ragdolls.
In
1965 the Ragdolls were registered as separate breed in the USA. In the 1980s
the first Ragdolls had been brought to Germany. |

Temperament
The Ragdoll is a very docile, gentle and quiet cat. Nothing can disturb this
cat and it seems to have a 'nothing bothers me' attitude. Ragdolls love
human companionship, they make endearing and lovely companions. The cats
appear to love being carried around, also by children. |
Grooming
Ragdolls are easy going cats, their silky coat has no tendency to mate or to
get knots. As Ragdolls are longhaired cats, they should be brushed on a
regular basis, to get rid of old and dead hairs in their fur. |
